Remove the door (store hinges safely). Basecoat entire box in a mix of Clear Glaze Medium
(4 parts), Brown Earth (1 part), Burnt Umber (1 part). When dry, tape around the edge of
the door with brown plastic package tape (2" wide) so that the centre is an exposed
rectangle. Using a damp sea sponge, dab into Teal Green on the palette and sponge within
the exposed central area to cover fairly well. When dry, remove the tape and trace on the
design.
GUM LEAVES. Load Pine Green (moist) on no. 4 round brush, swipe through Warm White and
then Brown Earth - paint through leaves smoothly from stem to tip. Add more white to the
greeny brown mix and outline and centre line leaves with liner brush.
GUM NUTS. Coat rear nuts with Brown Earth using round brush, then middle nut in mix of
Pine Green, white and brown Earth. This colour also in centre of caps. Add extra white and
paint in centres of nuts. With a little of this lighter colour on round brush, smudge
highlights on bowl of nuts - some areas just Brown Earth + white. Darken on one side with
Brown Earth. Outline centres in Brown Earth, then a circle of white below this. Paint in
stems in Brown Earth and white with liner brush (attach these to nut shell).
STEMS AND CAPS. Base in with round brush Burnt Sienna and white - liner on stems. Pick up
a little Burnt sienna and work shade on side. Outline centres with Brown Earth and white.
Fine stamen coming out in watery white. Paint stems of peas in Brown Earth and white,
roughly swiped mix.
GUM BLOSSOMS. Fine lines in Napthol Red Light (watery) from out to in (turn work upside
down). Add white and build up layers of stamens becoming lighter and lighter - liner
brush. Must keep very watery. Add pink and red dots to ends of stamens.
DESERT PEA LEAVES. Load No. 4 round with Moss Green, swipe through Pine Green and Warm
White. Paint outwards in two pressure strokes to form each leaf. Outline in leaf colour +
extra white.
PEA FLOWERS. Base petals in a mix of Napthol Crimson and Napthol Red Light with No. 4
round brush. Keep a clear idea of each petal with the strokes. Change to No. 3 round
brush, highlight petals with dry brush Cadmium Scarlet then a little area with Cadmium
Scarlet + white. Paint centres black. Dry. Dry brush specks of white highlight onto black
with No. 3 round. Outline a little of the black with watery white. Some outlining on pea
petals also.
When dry, float Burnt Umber onto any leaf or petal which is overlapped by another. Use
3/8" angled shader with flow Medium, then sideload Burnt Umber, palette blend. Keep
soft. Float Teal Green onto the background behind each leaf or petal stem.
